ABOUT CANADA-IN-ASIA: MOMENTUM
Canada-in-Asia: Momentum is a milestone engagement series leading up to the Canada-in-Asia Conference 2027 (CIAC2027), March 3-4 in Singapore, convening senior leaders from government, business, and academia to explore key issues shaping Canada–Asia relations in Indo-Pacific cities.
Each Momentum event will spotlight key issues – and opportunities – facing Canada and Asia, support business collaboration opportunities, and kickstart discussions on the critical pillars of CIAC2027: energy security, food security, and defence industries.

Powering Taiwan’s Future: Canadian Energy, Materials, and Technology
Canada-in-Asia: Momentum Taipei kicks off the 2026 Momentum series in Taiwan with a focus on the energy and materials foundations of advanced technology manufacturing. Taiwan's semiconductor ecosystem accounts for a growing share of national electricity demand, with credible estimates placing Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) alone at close to 8 per cent of total consumption. Taipower's own chairman has captured the policy to three words: electricity is competitiveness. The supply side is under strain. Taiwan holds approximately 150 days of oil reserves but only about 11 days of spare LNG. The demand side is moving faster still. TSMC has brought its RE100 commitment forward to 2040 with a 60 per cent renewable target for 2030, and Taiwan intends to tender 15 gigawatts of offshore wind between 2026 and 2035. ​ Canada is arriving with a track record and the intention of answering what comes next. Energy technologies, LNG, renewables, critical minerals – all are services and goods Canada can partner with Taiwan on to support Taiwan’s semiconductor and advanced manufacturing ecosystems. This Momentum event seeks to illuminate the needs and the pathways for cooperation.

Panel 1: Firm Power for the Fab – Exploring Canada–Taiwan Partnerships in LNG and Hydrogen

Taiwan’s growing semiconductor and electronics ecosystem is driving rising demand for reliable, affordable and resilient power. LNG has become an increasingly important source of firm power, while ongoing shifts in global energy markets are highlighting the importance of diversified and secure supply. Canada is emerging as a significant player in the Pacific LNG market, with LNG Canada now shipping from Kitimat and several additional projects — including Cedar LNG, Ksi Lisims LNG and Woodfibre LNG — forming a growing pipeline of supply. With Canada seeking further investment in its LNG infrastructure, new opportunities are emerging to strengthen energy partnerships across the Pacific. This panel will explore what a genuinely diversified LNG supply network could look like for Taiwan, the potential role of hydrogen in future power generation, and the opportunities and practical considerations for a Canada–Taiwan partnership across LNG and hydrogen. Panel 2: Canadian Energy and Materials Complementarity for Taiwan’s Technology Success

Taiwan’s leadership in semiconductors, AI hardware and advanced manufacturing is creating growing demand for secure supplies of energy, critical minerals and enabling technologies. Canada, with its strengths in energy, critical minerals and emerging clean technology, offers complementary capabilities that could support Taiwan’s technology ambitions. This panel will explore where Canadian capabilities can best complement Taiwan’s industrial strengths, including in clean energy, energy storage, grid modernisation and critical minerals. Panellists will consider how the two economies can move beyond traditional trade relationships towards deeper industrial cooperation — connecting Taiwan’s expertise in AI hardware and advanced manufacturing with Canada’s resources, energy capabilities and emerging technologies. Discussion will also examine opportunities across the new energy technology ecosystem, including testing and engineering, as well as the critical minerals supply chains required for batteries, permanent magnets and semiconductor manufacturing. The panel will consider what practical partnerships, investment opportunities and supply-chain linkages could emerge between Canada and Taiwan. Format: 4 speakers plus moderator. Closing Remarks and the Road to CIAC2027

The closing session will highlight the key insights and opportunities emerging from Momentum Taipei. It will also provide an opportunity for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan to invite interested participants to join a Taiwanese business delegation to Singapore, continuing the conversations initiated in Taipei and connecting with senior Canadian and Asian stakeholders at CIAC2027.
